I can offer a range of stimulating talks to garden clubs, allotment societies and plant groups.
Try me out. I hope to be refreshing, informative and will leave the audience in a plant-infused daze!
I am sometimes described as a ‘modern day plant hunter’- always busy searching for new, different and unusual plants across the world. I’ve worked at Thompson & Morgan, the UK’s largest mail order plant company for over 18 years, having won a garden design competition, run by them, when I was still at school. I have an extremely unique job role.
I was named as one of the Top 20 most influential Horticulturists in the UK by The Sunday Times, an exclusive list is their roundup of the people who shape the choice of plants in our gardens. 2015 was the first time that I was added to the list, and I am now in the company of household names such as Alan Titchmarsh, James Wong, and even Prince Charles HRH.
I began my horticultural career at the tender age of just 5 years old, shadowing my Nana and Granddad in their urban garden, as they cultured dahlias and chrysanthemums for exhibiting in local flower shows. During my teenage years, whilst friends were out causing mischief, I was in my parent’s garden, propagating herb plants which I then sold through adverts in the back of BBC Gardener’s World magazine!
Having joined Thompson & Morgan at the age of 18, I developed with the business, treating the public to plants such as the TomTato, a worldwide phenomenon that is half-potato, half-tomato! I also work hard to select plants built for garden performance; so they may be longer-flowering, more disease resistant, or in colours never seen before. Ultimately, I want to help gardeners across the UK to grow different, better plants, and to make gardening easier!
I have many years of experience on the QVC shopping channel, occasional stints on BBC and ITV shows, and have a frequent slot on BBC Radio Suffolk’s live garden phone-in. You can view my showreel, and find out more about me, here! I’m keen to share my knowledge and findings – and hope that I do this in a confident, concise and fun way.
I regularly travel to garden clubs across the UK with my range of presentations. The most popular talk I can provide is entitled ‘New, different and unusual plants’. This stimulating talk lasts an hour, and with unlimited time for questions afterwards. The talk meanders through a wealth of exciting plants, often leaving the audience quite overwhelmed! The talk has been well received by clubs around the county for the last few seasons.
I have recently added a new exciting talk to my portfolio, named ’50 fab plants in 50 minutes’, and which shows a wide range of plants with unique stories and qualities. The audience will see oddities such as the ghost plant, the oldest plant in existence, rare yellow fuchsias and much more!
This is the full list of talks available. Alternatively, if you have a specific need not listed here, we can discuss having something built for your club’s needs:

The Hardy Plant Society recently said “Michael gave a talk on new and unusual plants. It was very well executed, structured and catered for the novice through to experienced gardener. Michael knows his subject matter well and did a very skilful job of fielding questions afterwards from some very experienced plants people.” You can find other testimonials here.
I can also accommodate short notice requests, so please let me know your needs.
