Fashion in gardens and plants exists, and it’s alive and well at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! But, how can you re-create some of the buzzing trends in your own backyard or patio. I was invited onto ITV This Morning to show Philip and Holly how!
- Ferns are very useful in the garden- thanks to their texture, shape and form- plus they grow successfully in damp, dark shady corners!
- Display them however you like- I would stay with paler colours, so the ferns can show their true beauty!
- Foxgloves were popular at Chelsea AGAIN! The ‘Illumination’ Series of Foxgloves is an unusual hybrid, which gives tropical colours, longer flowering and a shrub-like habit.
- Or, you may prefer the pastel tones. Newer breeding makes them longer blooming than the traditional cottage garden types too!
- The zeitgeest of the show was also succulents- they are so tough, was to grow and perfect if you forget to water your plants…
- You can display succulents in my decorative and inventive ways- remember they aren;t edible though!
- There were plenty of balls at Chelsea in all shapes and sizes! I love these angular sculptures, which are reasonably priced too!
- Rosy Hardy’s Freefolk garden for Brewin Dolphin used the sphere shapes to great effect!
- Holly’s favourite was the sublime Cosmos ‘Cupcakes’- which we underplanted the royal archway with!

I really enjoyed my time on the show, and hope we were able to prove that anyone can create a little bit of the ‘greatest flower show on earth’ in their own backyard! Philip and Holly were very welcoming, as was the audience it seems- click here!
