The show gardens at Volmary in Germany sure do stimulate the senses, in every single way! Just to prove that, I have selected 3 plants that tickled each of my 5 senses; smell, touch, taste, hear and sight:
SMELL
Black Basil- giant and pungent, with that typical clove-like punch!
Lemon Verbena is my favourite fragrance, it’s rich and bloody sexy as hell!
Unbeknown to many, Bidens actually possess a tempting honey-esque fragrance!
TOUCH
The Obedient Plant (Physostegia) has small florets that can be moved to exactly where you want them to be!
Rue (Ruta graveolens) is here because you SHOULDN’T touch it! The amusingly shaped leaves can cause a rash!
Alchemilla mollis has soft, felted leaves- and i just love how the raindrops stick to it!
TASTE
I HATE tomatoes, but I LOVE these super sweet orange ones, they’re like garden sweeties!
Learning more and more about edible flowers every day- these Cosmos tasted of violets, YES really!
Spilanthes is a little devil of a flower- it actually numbs the inside of your mouth.. great for toothaches!
HEAR
Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ is my favourite grass- with it’s stained glass looks, and nice rustling sounds!
Sunflowers were huge in the trial garden, and creaked entertainingly in the wind!
The crunch of a cucumber cannot be beaten- and these slices were heart-shaped, created using a special mould!
SIGHT
Wowsers! Coleus ‘Combat’ is pure psychedelia overload! Makes a fabulous patio plant, and even gives out of character blue flowers too!
Mina lobata is a sight to behold- appearing like the Spanish Flag! Quick climber which even grows well in cool UK summers!
Flamboyant Dahlias were the flower de jour, and this one was especially divine- with red and white pompom heads!
Girlontor
That Coleus ‘combat’ camouflage is pure AbFab! Edina would love it!
