It was a late night in a 36th floor New York apartment. I had just handed my notice in at Thompson and Morgan- where I’d worked for 18 years- and wasn’t quite sure what to do next. I’d been going back and forth to my partner Rafal’s NYC apartment every few months to visit him. To be honest though, I think he subconsciously inspired me to open up my career and see what else was out there, and not just in the UK either.
We talked that night about what type of branding I could have, I really wasn’t sure. I have been Gardening Greek on Twitter for many years, which many people mistook for Gardening Geek, and Plant Hunter UK on Facebook. It all needed tying up somewhere, somehow.
We had a chat about my childhood and how I felt about my love of plants, and it seemed like geek was in fact the right word to use! Being a geek when I was a kid was something to be ashamed of back then, but now times had changed, and being a geek was really quite oooh la la!
We scuttled around that night, registering the website and all the matching social media handles. Rafal also came up with some brilliant logos for me, where we used the two fingers sign. This would be the international sign of being a Plant Geek!
Now here we are. 3 years later. I have worked in Canada, USA, Japan, China, all across Europe, and up and down the UK. I have really really enjoyed sharing my love of plants with an ever-growing audience.
And I don’t plan to stop there. There are plenty of exciting plans for the future. And I love having you guys on the ride with me.
I also built various different brands in that time too, we have the amazing Weird & Wacky Plants brand, the cheeky T-shirt brand Rude Botany, and a range of different merchandise in the Mr Plant Geek Shop.
