Visiting the garden hidden above New York City

I was super excited to explore the high line in New York City yesterday!

This old and long forgotten tramway has been sensationally transformation into a high rise botanical paradise, narrowly escaping demolition in the late 1980’S. This glorious open space, created and managed by The Friends of the High Line, was opened to the public in 1999. It is designed to perfection and full to the brim with an amazing selection of plants, I can’t get the Cotinus out of my mind…!

Let’s take a tour. I hopped onto the tramway at the 34th Street entrance, where the design is open, airy and has a prairie feel. This is perhaps where the track feels at it’s most industrial, but don’t let that put you off, it gets far more glossy further in!

Passing through the tramway, it delightfully twists and turns, allowing you to see what’s up ahead. You’ll be smiling at the way this greenery snakes through the city at an elevated level.

The planting is absolutely divine too, and will look incredible within just a few weeks, thanks to the budding lilies and developing perennials! Check out these checkerboard effects on the tracks.

There are choice plants abound too!

All in all, this is a sensational paradise in the middle of the city! But, it isn’t just some area that has municipal planting, this is well thought through, and would grab the plant lovers attention as much as any regular tourist! A must-see attraction, and worth coming back for too- perhaps 4 times a year is recommended!
